When mum of three Kelly, 42, was diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer that had spread to her liver, the news came as a shock. She had been experiencing symptoms for two years and had visited her GP several times for advice and tests. It wasn’t until changes in her bowel habits and blood in her stool appeared that further investigations confirmed the cancer.
Kelly was supported by two Macmillan nurses at Medway Hospital, Karen and Ros.
“There was a Macmillan nurse in the room with us at that first meeting with the oncologist. I was on the phone to them all the time asking questions. They really got me through that time when I was waiting for appointments. They kept pushing for the next step and chasing for updates. They were brilliant.”
She also joined a Macmillan-run support group specifically for people with metastatic cancers and received financial guidance through the Macmillan Support Line.
“Macmillan have just been there all the way through… I’m not sure I’d be in the same position today if it wasn’t for them. I can imagine it being a very different story.”
